The best caliber used to be the 223 Rem. I used to like a gun like the 350 Rem Mag or 223 Rem that is much more accurate than I am. One issue is if you’re a hunter, the ring or the lanyard on the Marlin 336 can snag on a branch or even your own clothing and possibly pop your receiver cover off. My Mom’s admired caliber for groundhogs out to 300-400 yards is anything in a 223 Rem.
